Japan secured the top spot with a substantial number of E-1 visas issued in FY 2022. This comes as no surprise, given the deep economic ties between the U.S. and Japan. U.S. goods and services trade with Japan totaled an estimated $307.4 billion in 2022. Exports were $118.5 billion; imports were $188.8 billion.
In 2022, U.S. exports of services to Japan were an estimated $38.3 billion, while imports of services from Japan were an estimated $40.8 billion in 2022.
2. Canada:
As the U.S.'s neighbor to the north, Canada has maintained a strong presence in the E-1 visa program. The Canada-U.S. trade relationship is one of the most extensive and prosperous globally, supported by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and its successor, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
U.S. goods exports to Canada in 2022 totaled $356.5 billion, while U.S. goods imports from Canada totaled $436.6 billion last year, up 22.2% from 2021.
U.S. exports of services to Canada were an estimated $71.3 billion in 2022. Last year, U.S. imports of services from Canada were an estimated $44.6 billion.
3. Mexico:
Mexico's position on this list highlights the significant trade connections between the U.S. and its southern neighbor. The E-1 visa program has enabled Mexican businesses and entrepreneurs to access U.S. markets, fostering economic growth on both sides of the border.
U.S. goods exports to Mexico in 2022 were $324.3 billion, up 17% from 2021, while U.S. goods imports from Mexico totaled $454.8 billion, an increase of 18.9% from 2021.
U.S. exports of services to Mexico were roughly $37.7 billion in 2022. U.S. imports of services from Mexico were an estimated $38.3 billion in 2022.
4. Taiwan:
Taiwan's appearance among the top five countries with the most E-1 visas underscores the importance of this relationship. The U.S. and Taiwan have robust economic ties, and the E-1 visa program plays a role in promoting trade and economic cooperation between the two nations.
Last year, U.S. goods exports to Taiwan reached $44.2 billion, while U.S. goods imports from Taiwan totaled $91.7 billion.
U.S. exports of services to Taiwan were an estimated $10.3 billion in 2022. U.S. imports of services from Taiwan were an estimated $13.8 billion last year.
5. Germany:
Germany, as a major economic power in Europe, has always had a strong presence in the E-1 visa program. With numerous German companies operating in the United States and vice versa, the program encourages the flow of skilled workers and professionals between the two nations.
In 2022, U.S. goods exports to Germany totaled $72.5 billion, while U.S. goods imports from Germany reached $146.6 billion.
