My E-2 Visa Is Stamped in My Expired Passport. What Should I Do?

My E-2 Visa Is Stamped in My Expired Passport. What Should I Do?

If you’re an E-2 visa holder and just realized your visa is stamped in an expired passport, you might be wondering:

“Can I still travel to the United States?”

Good news:

In most cases, you don’t need a new E-2 visa just because your passport expired.

Here’s exactly what you need to know:

Your E-2 Visa Is Still Valid (Even If Your Passport Isn’t)

According to travel.state.gov, a valid U.S. visa remains valid until its expiration date — even if it’s in an expired passport.

As long as your E-2 visa hasn’t been canceled or revoked, you can continue to use it to enter the United States.

Important:

Do not remove the visa from your expired passport.

Your E-2 visa is only valid if it remains physically intact and attached to the passport it was issued in.

How to Travel with Your E-2 Visa in an Expired Passport

When traveling, make sure to carry both passports with you:

  • Your expired passport with the valid E-2 visa inside, and
  • Your new, valid passport (the one you’ll use for identification).

At check-in and during your arrival at a U.S. port of entry, you’ll present both documents together.

The immigration officer will review your valid E-2 visa in the old passport along with your information in the new passport — and as long as everything matches, you should be admitted without issue. If the officer decides to admit you into the United States, they will stamp your new passport with an admission stamp along with the annotation "VIOPP" (visa in other passport).

Tips for a Smooth Reentry to the U.S.

  • Keep both passports easily accessible when you travel.
  • Double-check your E-2 visa’s expiration date before making travel plans.
  • Ensure that your personal information (like your name and nationality) matches exactly between the expired and new passports.
  • If your name has changed (due to marriage, etc.), check with the U.S. consulate or embassy before traveling to avoid any potential issues.

Final Word for E-2 Visa Holders

If your E-2 visa is stamped in an expired passport, you can still travel and work in the United States — no need to panic or apply for a new visa.

Just make sure you do not remove the visa from your old passport and always travel with both your old and new passports together.
