E1 (E-1) Treaty Trader Visa Business Plans

Partnering with Immigration Attorneys & Treaty Traders

An E1 Treaty Trader Visa allows a national of a treaty country (a country with which the United States maintains a treaty of commerce and navigation) to be admitted to the United States solely to engage in international trade on his or her own behalf. The key to submitting an effective visa application is to have a thorough and comprehensive business plan that focuses on the key E1 (E-1) requirements of “substantial trade” and “principal trade” between the United States and the treaty country which qualified the treaty trader for E1 (E-1) classification.

E-1 (E1) Products

E-1 (E1) Business Plan - Short Version

Our short plans are designed for U.S. posts that impose a cap on the number of pages for visa filings (Canada, Spain, Germany, etc.) Our short business plans range from 3 to 10 pages. These compact plans include a market analysis and 5-year staffing, revenue, and profit and loss projections. They also address specific visa requirements, including E-1 substantial trade and principal trade.

E-1 (E1) Business Plan - Standard Version

We strongly believe that business plans with fewer pages are more effective and direct. Our standard business plans are approximately 15-20 pages long. They include a market analysis and 5-year staffing, revenue, and profit and loss projections. They also address specific visa requirements such as substantial trade and principal trade.

If you need assistance, Visa Business Plans is here to provide professional guidance in creating an immigration business plan focused specifically on E1 (E-1) requirements.

General qualifications of an E1 Treaty Trader

  • Must be a national of a treaty country with which the United States maintains a treaty of commerce and navigation
  • Nationals of qualifying treaty countries who undertake a significant amount of international trade with the United States may qualify for this type of visa. The volume of such trade must be sufficient to justify the trader or his/her employee(s) being in the United States to manage the trade, and must constitute the majority of the trader's international trade (i.e. at least 50% of the Trader's exports/imports must be to/from the U.S.)

Have Questions?

  • Can Visa Business Plans help with an E-1 business plan?

Yes. Visa Business Plans prepares custom E-1 business plans that document trade volume, market analysis, and financial projections to support the "substantial and principal trade" requirements USCIS and consular officers look for.

  • Why does an E-1 application need a business plan?

A business plan demonstrates the nature, volume, and continuity of trade between the U.S. and the treaty country, showing the adjudicating officer that the trading activity is substantial, ongoing, and principally (over 50%) between the two countries.

  • Does an E-1 visa require a specific minimum investment?

No fixed dollar minimum is required by regulation, but the trading business must generate enough volume to support the trader and their family and to justify the applicant's presence in the U.S. managing it.

  • What does "substantial trade" mean for an E-1 visa?

Substantial trade means a sizable, continuous volume of trade over time, rather than a single or occasional transaction — USCIS looks at the number of transactions and total trade value, not just one large deal.
